Obie's Story

Obie

Obie was a puppy that few would have tried to save. He came into the Maury County shelter as a stray with three broken legs. He was only about 3 months old. What can you do with a puppy with three broken legs?? The shelter asked if there was any chance we could find a rescue to take him. He was so sweet and young that no one wanted to euthanize him!

We reached out to Ashley because C.A.R.E. has always been willing to take on medical cases. Thankfully they said yes and we rushed him to NVS in Nashville at 5:30 the next morning so he could be evaluated by a board certified orthopedic surgeon to see if there was any way to save his 3 broken legs and help him regain mobility & quality of life. After three days of hospitalization Obie had surgery on his two back legs. It was suggested that C.A.R.E. wait to operate on the front leg until after they were sure the repair on his back legs was successful. It was stressed that he would need intense physical therapy if he was to have any hope of those back legs moving again. He was released a couple days later and delivered to his foster home where his long healing process began.

Obie initially couldn’t walk at all. His foster mom had to carry him outside and help him try to stand so he could go potty.

The vets weren’t sure if he would ever walk again or if he’d be able to keep his front leg. His foster mom was determined that he would not only walk but run. The rescue put in countless hours of physical therapy and rehab work and before we knew it he was pulling himself up & hobbling around. Within a week of therapy his range of motion had improved and he had even started to run! It was a miracle! While physical therapy got his back legs moving, his front leg stayed splinted and casted for many months. His front leg took the longer to heal but it did in fact eventually heal and he was able to keep if after all. Anyone who see’s Obie today wouldn’t believe that he was once totally immobile with very low odds. He LOVES to play and be a total goof like any other pup.
