Blue's Story

Blue Beauty

Blue was left behind after a family moved. She was left pregnant and homeless. The poor girl also tested positive for heartworms. Luckily one of our rescue partners agreed to take her in. She was transported to them and placed into a foster home so she could prepare for having her pups (the plan was to hold off on treating her heartworms until after the pups had been born and raised).

As it got close to her due date her foster mom began keeping a closer eye on her watching her behaviors and body temp. Luckily this wasn’t her first time assisting a pregnant dog whelp a litter. As Blue went into labor everything seemed to be off to a normal start until the first pup was actually born. Little did her foster mom know, she must have had a blood clot thrown to her uterus. After she birthed the first puppy she started bleeding profusely (scaring her foster mom to death) and had to be raced to an emergency vet office to have an emergency c-section. Have we mentioned this happened in the middle of a huge snow storm?? Thankfully they made it safely. The emergency team was able to save 2 more of her puppies. Their heartbeats were faint and they weren’t breathing properly so they sadly weren’t given good odds of survival. As for Blue, she had to be hospitalized for a week and ultimately had a blood transfusion and another surgery a week after her c-section.

Blue was a fighter. She eventually made a full recovery and her 3 little babies had been placed into another foster home to be bottle fed. The pups struggled initially. Their breathing took awhile to normalize and they didn’t really catch onto nursing from the bottles easily. With lots of time and patience and the help of a very willing stand-in “momma dog” all three did catch onto the bottle routine. They grew into thriving beautiful pups!!!

While Blue had recovered from her pregnancy, she is now fighting her second battle - heartworms. She is currently in treatment and in a few months will hopefully be free and clear of those too! She’s currently still looking for her forever home if anyone is looking to expand their furry family (https://care.rescuegroups.org/animals/detail?AnimalID=16566116 )
